Another Craigsist scammer strikes again on the East Side of Providence!
I just received a phone call on this listing on the East Side of Providence RI. The potential renter was outside looking at the sign and reciting the ad from Craig’s list and the email he received from the “owner” asking $1000 a month for this 4 bedroom house, way under market.
I explained to him that his was a Craigsist scam. It happens all the time.
Here is how it works:
A scammer goes to the tax assessor’s database and finds the name of the owner. They then create a phony email address using the owner’s name. They post the listing on Craigsist using listing photos from the MLS system. They inform a potential renter that they are “out of the country” but to drive by the house and take a look. If they like what they see, the renter is instructed to send wired money to a Western Union account.
The only recourse is to report the scam to Craigsist which then removes the false rental listing. That is about it. Seller’s sometimes wonder why random people are driving by their home or walking around the property unannounced. It can be very disconcerting.
Do don’t be fooled! If it’s too good to be true, it probably is!
